FAQs > Lessons > How old does my child have to be to start music lessons?
First of all, there is no harm in waiting to begin formal lessons. Yes, there is a well-documented "window" for music and language development that closes after age five or six, but this does not mean that a weekly piano lesson is the only way to maximize the child's musical aptitude. All of the experiences your child has with music, including casual listening in the home, will help to shape his or her potential.
We get the best results starting violin no earlier than age three and piano no earlier than age four. Guitar is recommended after age six, although we do have a preparatory program for four- and five-year-olds who want to play guitar and will accept no substitute. We can start drums at age six or seven. All other instruments are on a case-by-case basis, although generally woodwinds and brass should wait until late elementary school.
For voice lessons, we recommend that children under age twelve try an instrument first. If the child is truly set on voice lessons and/or is already taking an instrument, we can do voice lessons.
