FAQs > Practice > Will my kids hate music if I make them practice?
Don't be afraid of "making" your kids practice. Think of it like exercise or brushing your teeth: you just do it, and it doesn't matter whether you want to or not. Sometimes they'll want to , sometimes they won't, and they should do it anyway. If it were fun 100% of the time, we'd all be Yo-yo Ma.
Feel free to use appropriate rewards at home to help associate practice with something desirable (dessert, tv time, game time, a sticker, etc.).
The overall program should be rewarding enough that your child wants to participate, even if they are not excited to practice at home all the time. If your child is not even looking forward to lessons, it may be time to put lessons on hold until more desire is present.
If you do not help your children to establish a practice routine, they will not learn how to play the instrument and that is definitely not fun or rewarding. The lessons themselves are not enough.
