Improv Arts

Get comfortable off the script and off the page in a safe space created by our beloved "Mr. V" (Thomas Vinton).

Be fearless.Nearly every contemporary genre - from bluegrass to hip hop - relies heavily on musicians who know how to create words and music on the spot. Good improvisers tap into a level of creativity that enhances their musical ability and inspires their audiences.

While a good jam is really a form of modern magic, techniques do exist that help performers dazzle us with their onstage wizardry.

To release the improvisational spirit inherent in everyone, The Improv Arts Workshop incorporates activities from many disciplines, including drama, comedy, dance, poetry, and of course, music.

We get to:

  • Play ridiculously fun games
  • Get out of our critical heads and into our creative hearts
  • Sing in made-up languages
  • Introduce one another to our imaginary friends
  • Be totally crazy and get away with it
  • Take turns acting out improbable scenarios
  • Make those weird sounds and movements that people usually tell us to stop doing

Participants also learn tricks of the trade that make audiences wonder, "How do they do that?" Using memory techniques and secret signals, improv artists are always ready to keep things moving in interesting ways.

A final performance allows the crew to show their stuff and bring the audience into the act. But the benefits of the workshop will last much longer: you'll find a new-found confidence improvising in real-life situations, which require us to make decisions on the fly rather than with scripted actions.

This workshop will be offered the weeks of June 25 and July 18, 2012 at 56 17th Street in Ansley Park. Sign up now!

All Eclectic Music workshops are one-week, half-day workshops in which participants (ages five and up) are grouped based on age and experience. Two workshops can be combined to create a full-day workshop. Tuition starts at $160 per workshop and is 10% off until April 1.
