Piano Class

Encouraging autonomy, mastery, and self-expression

When you walk into the room, it's uncanny - you'll find a bunch of kids, completely silent.

Focused.

Well, if you caught them ten minutes ago, they might have been singing, playing a game, jamming together, or taking turns performing, but right now they are each sitting at their individual keyboards, headphones on, playing their songs, pretty much content.

We have a few tricks in order to keep our students so engaged.

First, we focus on songs. Right from the get-go, kids learn actual, recognizable songs, not just exercises disguised as songs. We sing the songs together so they can fall in love with the ones they don't already know and translate them to the piano.

We use solfege ("the do re mis") in order to help kids internalize melodic patterns. The patterns really do become part of them - the kids will wander out of class still echoing "sol mi la sol mi" and so on.

We're stealing many of the best ideas of elementary school reading teachers and using them in a musical context. Just like in a picture book, our method has frequent page turns so that kids can measure their progress in a concrete way.

We teach kids to assess their own progress, which makes them able to stick to their work independently during times when the teacher is coaching another student one-on-one (or when they are playing at home).

Our unique method, combined with the social experience of a group class, is like nothing else you'll find. Best of all, we offer flexibility: an a la carte scheduling option, a liberal attendance policy, and a program customized to your child's level of experience.
