The Songwriter’s Tool Kit: A Beginner’s Guide to Songwriting
JANUARY 26, 2019 | 9am-12pm
If there is any part of you that wants to do this workshop, do it.
Even if you've never written a song.
Even if you have a notebook full of half-finished songs that you would never want anyone to see.
The thing is, anyone can learn. Anyone can get better. You will be amazed and delighted at what you're able to come up with when you've got guidance, encouragement, accountability, and very specific assignments.
Have you ever wanted to write songs but didn't know where to start? Or maybe you've come up with a chorus but didn't know what to do next? Perhaps you've even finished a song or two but you're not sure how to do it again. Well you are certainly not alone!
Songwriting is a natural form of expression. Nearly all children do it spontaneously. It's only later that we "learn" that it is a special ability reserved for a select few. But the truth is, everyone can write songs, and everyone can get better at writing songs. The best way to learn to just start doing it! With playful creative prompts, fun writing exercises, and constructive feedback we will explore and develop our songwriting abilities together. And most importantly, you will leave this workshop inspired, and with the tools, to continue creating!
Topics we will explore:
How to get started
Tricks to help you come up with ideas… even when you think you're stuck
The qualities that make lyrics great, and how to write good ones yourself
How a song should be structured - and how it could be structured
Tips and tricks to creating all the parts of a song; melody, chorus, and bridge
Rhyming and word choice
What is your melody saying
And how do you know if it is good?
